Meet the Founders: Self Space
Founded by therapists Jodie Cariss and Chance Marshall, Self Space, the world’s first on demand therapy service on the high street and online, is the brand behind Nobu’s luxury mental maintenance retreat.
Tell us about Self Space…
Self Space is a contemporary mental health service offering a good conversation with a qualified person. No waiting lists, no rigid structures—just straightforward access to flexible therapy. On the high street and online from your own couch.
We are very proud to work with Nobu Ibiza: the retreats stem from our concept of daily mental maintenance, normalising the conversation around mental health and bringing it fully to light.
When did it begin?
We launched Self Space in 2018, with one initial space in Shoreditch. Our offering was simple but radically different: same-day therapy, morning ‘til night, seven days a week.
When we first launched, as two qualified therapists we knew there was nothing in the wellness space that reflected a proactive approach of everyday mental maintenance, and that the landscape in general needed a radical overhaul.
As a culture, we tend to look to therapy as a last resort, and instead, we wanted to create something that progressed us towards supporting people to unlock their full potential and give people the opportunity to find glimmers of light, joy and meaning.
How’s it going now?
We have delivered over 100,000 sessions, grown to (soon to be) seven high street locations, and built a diverse team of qualified therapists, psychologists, and counsellors. We offer therapy for individuals, families, couples, and groups, whether you’re booking for yourself or accessing support through your workplace. And we now provide 1:1 therapy, programmes of mental health workshops, and leadership training for companies like Huel, Depop, Oatly, CALM, The Old Vic, Sweaty Betty, Papier and more.
We wrote a book together, How To Grow Through What You Go Through which focused on the importance of every day mental maintenance.
Beyond therapy, community is so important to us. We have digital platform TOGETHER*, run a Walk Club, a Book Club, a monthly Tea & Crumpets online group and talk series called Not suitable for Work. And of course our Nobu Ibiza luxury mental maintenance retreat…
What should we expect from the retreat?
Our three-day mental maintenance retreats help you get to know yourself better, find calm, and make positive, lasting changes in your life while enjoying the best of the beautiful island. We cover many aspects of our human lives, including challenges, relationships, and emotional resilience, and they are designed to create a space to delve into mental health. You can expect journal writing sessions, beach walks, meditation, and reflection, with plenty of amazing food in a beautiful setting!
What have people said about the retreat?
"I needed some time away to give things space to breathe. Being somewhere that is so beautiful, that for me that is a huge treat, and not somewhere where I would normally be able to spend time."
"Opening up in front of a group of people who quickly went from being strangers to feeling like friends. You won’t regret it, really great things can come from it, it’s lifechanging."
"If your heart or your head is already telling you, give it a go, you’re more than half way there. You just need to get on a plane."
You also run a retreat for leaders - tell us about that.
For businesses that want to make a real impact for their teams and leaders, we’ve developed a retreat that is designed to elevate leadership through self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and restorative, creative therapy. Businesses can send their team members and this is also perfect for founders.
Our CPD certified leadership retreat offers a meaningful break from the hustle and gives the space to reflect and grow. We’ve squeezed everything we’ve learned in the last 10 years from working with global businesses, so that looking after leaders isn’t just a tick box exercise. It really works.
The ‘Grow Through It’ Retreats will take place from 13th – 16th April 2025 and from 13th – 16th October 2025. More info here.
